American History Facts

One of Dirk Kettlewell’s interests is American history. There is so much information and so many events that have shaped and molded America to what it is today. Below are a few facts that you may not know about American history.

The first woman to run for president was Victoria Woodhull, 1872. Her running mate was Frederick Douglass. She was declared ineligible, but not because she was a woman. She would not yet be 35 years old until September after the January inauguration day. She received some votes, but are not recorded in the official results.

Harry S. Truman was the only president in this century who didn't have a
college education.

The first gold rush in the United States happened in Dahlonega, Georgia, 1828.

Before 1913, the U.S. had no income tax. The 16th Amendment was needed
so the government could do what they wanted to with the money.
